GLAADH Guidelines for Project Funding
Reviewed 2/11/2001

Overview
GLAADH was a project of art and design historians at the University of Sussex, The Open University and Middlesex University. GLAADH sought to encourage and embed cultural diversity in the Art, Architecture and Design curriculum. We aimed to identify good practice, as well as promote and support emerging teaching and learning strategies in the subject, appropriate to a multicultural society within a global context.

During our first year we developed a website, bulletin and JISC list to disseminate and exchange information and organised the first GLAADH Workshop at the University of Sussex (9-10 November 2001). During 2002 we invited all UK HE institution departments that were assessed under the 1996-99 round of Subject Review in Art, Architecture and Design History, under the QAA, to apply for funds to support initiatives to diversify the curricula. For an overview of the funding guidelines and selection criteria, please see the sections below.

Projects
GLAADH is seeking projects that will initiate or continue developing areas in the curriculum which will help diversify current practice. Projects could look at ways of integrating the arts of less traditionally studied cultures and communities (for example, Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas, but also including lesser studied regions in Europe and Diaspora communities). Projects should focus on the enhancement of BA or MA teaching. Projects might include:

  • Acquiring teaching resources (slides, books, subscriptions)
  • "Development" time for a permanent member of staff through teaching buy-out
  • Enhancing a current programme of research which will lead to new curriculum developments
  • "Start up" research project for future funding which will have an impact on the curriculum
  • Regional workshops to present recent teaching developments on a subject

Funding
GLAADH will offer a minimum of £1,000 per project during 2002.
There is no fixed term for the duration of projects, but departments need to make a commitment of at least two years of working in partnership with GLAADH. Each project will be assisted by a member of the GLAADH team which includes art and design historians who have specific interest in the arts of China, Africa, Black-British, and the Americas. Projects do not have to be limited to any of these areas. During 2003 GLAADH will organise a series of regional workshops and a summer conference to support, discuss and disseminate the results of the projects. The GLAADH projects will be widely disseminated throughout nationally recognised forums as examples of innovative practice. We will assist participants in identifying further funding to complement their schemes.

Selection Criteria
We would like to assist up to about 15 projects and funds will be allocated according to the following assessment criteria:

2. Timescale
Is the timescale attainable?
3. Costs
Are costings reasonable? Is the department/institution providing some form of additional support?
4. Staff
Will the project involve one or more members of staff? Do they have direct teaching responsibilities?
5. Geographical location
We want to ensure that there is a broad distribution of projects through the HE I sector.
6. Dissemination
