Feedback Notes
GLAADH Workshop - Sussex University 9/10 November 2001

At the end of the two days of sessions, delegates were asked to write a few comments about their experience of the workshop on a Post-It note and stick it on the wall…

  • Useful to take time out to network and share experiences and strategies for expanding curriculum/methodologies. Benefits - Expanded community of interests.
  • Very useful and stimulating; in particular: Chance to talk to colleagues interested in similar curriculum developments; to find out more about teaching practices in other institutions; establishing a network for future debate and possible collaboration.
  • Good to have the chance to experience the enthusiasm for changing the conventional curriculum. But it is something to understand how we can help; on the other hand is there anything we should be doing within the Asian-Africa programme???? Jp17@soas.ac.uk
  • Enjoyed the two days very much. Organisation, accommodation, variety of issues, discussions, above all the sense that we are all engaged in a timely shift in priorities. At same time a feeling that we never faced the question whether the art history and visual culture curriculum should include the Islamic/ African/Asian/American/Australian.
  • Very informative and thought provoking. Workshops rather uneven (perhaps by their nature) but clearer idea of aim for search would have produced better dialogue
  • Meeting people, exchanging ideas, reassurances and permission/invitation to experiments on unfamiliar territory. Globalisation is temporal as much as geographical.
  • I found the session run by John Picton quirky, continually fascinating and enriching. The best thing about the weekend was meeting people from many different academic institutions and seeing the same readiness to engage in fostering the teaching of non-western art. This showed that there was a huge potential for developing this area of art history. Brilliantly organised.
  • Most useful part was opportunities for making contacts and networking.
  • Found ALL workshops on Saturday (only day I attended) were extremely stimulating, especially in the way they suggested practical and pragmatic solutions to a wide range of "problems".
  • Both practically useful and intellectually stimulating.
  • Excellent two days. Valuable way to meet people in related areas and exchanging ideas.
  • Very useful ideas about using objects to introduce and 'enter' new areas not in our curriculum. To encourage students to widen their own parameters. Very valuable to have a meeting across the institutions to make contact with colleagues who can advise.
  • Information about certain funding possibilities. Hearing about peoples' teaching experiences and obtaining their reading lists. Making contacts with different institutes.
  • Awareness of full extent of GLAADH's aims and activities. Awareness of range and richness of teaching of participants. Awareness of different approaches to discipline and attempts to redefine structure and outlook.
  • Very, very helpful to find specific ways and directions one (or many) can take towards including diverse materials. Good one to one discussions, maybe not the best person from my department to have been chosen to come, however, still helping me to be a good advocate.
  • Extremely useful to discuss approaches with colleagues. Made me re-think ways of including changes to courses. Food and the arrangements superbly organised. - Thoroughly enjoyable -.
  • Meeting and hearing from colleagues exploring similar ideas of curriculum development. Seeing the uses made of diverse curriculum elements.
  • Good to hear about concrete examples of teaching, curriculum development etc.
  • Extremely useful and interesting workshop. Especially useful for: - 1. Meeting people, 2. Stimulating discussion, 3. Practical examples to follow or compare.
  • Very positive: Especially sharing ideas and resources. Positive support for teaching initiative. More curriculum time needed, especially planning time. Possibly asking us to bring teaching material and resources to share.
  • Excellent workshop. Very well organised group of specialists, who were very inspiring. For me well timed as I review the HAAD undergraduate degree. I hope more workshops - real and virtual - will come in the future.
  • Predictably mixed - some sessions were excellent and useful, some less so - This is down to my interests and needs. Networking was useful.
  • Very helpful, stimulating. Needs to be long-term. The team should be very strong and should stay at the helm for longer than two more years... Can break down the prejudice? The workshop has given hope.
  • It was a good opportunity to meet people from different institutions and to find out the wide range of subject specialisation taught in the UK. Hope this will lead to greater co-operation between individuals and universities.
  • Very enjoyable. Excellent sharing of ideas and issues involved - teaching art and design history. Good to meet many other people already diversifying their curriculum. Yup, Great!
