Background, Aims and Objectives

This is a two-strand project:

1). Establish an undergraduate module focused on 'transculturation' and the visual arts. Contemporary practice in the visual arts and the historic reception of Non-Western visual culture will be addressed within the context of the politics of cultural representation and cultural resistance. The signifying practices employed in the institutional appropriation of cultural difference will also be considered as well as the concept of reciprocal cultural exchange and fusion of ideas. The module will be delivered in a number of ways which will include an introduction to cultural contexts, viewing collections and displays and through specialist visiting speakers. The module may lead to further developments including at MA level, feeding into the MA Cultural Policy and Management course and the proposed MA Australia Studies. The outline module was validated in July 2002 as part of the programme of studies for BA (Hons) Histories of Art, Design and Film students.

2). Develop teaching materials which will include an on-line resource - with a potential for broader dissemination.

Sheffield Hallam University will provide further funds for the acquisition of resources - slides, books, subscriptions etc., as well as travel costs for visits to archives, research centres etc.
